On January 14th at Antioch Baptist Church the Antioch Builds Community and the Durham Martin Luther King Jr. Day Steering Committee are sponsoring an event MLK weekend called “Faith, Partnership & Re-Entry Conference” to bring together clergy and laity to address re-entry in Durham.
Speakers include the Rev. Owen C. Caldwell Jr. of Richmond, a member of the Virginia Re-Entry Policy Academy and chairman of the family and community reintegration subcommittee of the Richmond Re-Entry Project. Other morning speakers will talk about Ban the Box, transitioning with sex offenders, organizing and working with faith teams, and what it’s like to be a returning citizen.

U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-1st District, will speak during the noon luncheon, and the conference will conclude with discussion of how to develop partnerships within the faith community.

Page hopes to bring together a network of congregations to look at the issue biblically and give returning citizens the total support of the community, including helping them gain employment.

“We’ve got to really be the ones to convince employers to give people a second chance,” Page said. “This day will focus on trying to develop a partnership plan.”
